Emergent & Child Led
Art
At Mommy’s Kids Childcare Centre, art is a language of expression and discovery. Children are invited to explore a rich variety of materials—paint, clay, natural objects, recycled items—through open-ended experiences that reflect their interests and stories. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, educators observe children’s artistic choices and document their evolving ideas, allowing creativity to flourish in a space where process is valued over product. Art becomes a mirror of each child’s identity, curiosity, and connection to the world around them.
Music
Music at Mommy’s Kids is woven into the rhythm of the day, offering children opportunities to explore sound, movement, and emotion. Whether tapping out beats on drums, singing familiar songs, or inventing new melodies, children engage in musical play that supports cognitive development and emotional expression. Following the emergent curriculum, musical experiences are shaped by the children’s interests—perhaps sparked by a bird’s song outside or a favorite lullaby—creating a dynamic and joyful learning environment.
Movement
Movement is celebrated as a vital part of learning and self-expression. Children develop gross motor skills through dance, yoga, obstacle courses, and spontaneous outdoor play, while fine motor activities like sculpting clay support coordination and focus. Educators observe and respond to children’s physical explorations, encouraging them to challenge their bodies in safe, supportive ways. Movement also fosters pro-social behavior, as children learn to cooperate, take turns, and celebrate each other’s achievements.
Language
Language development is nurtured through storytelling, dramatic play, conversations, and exposure to print-rich environments. Children are encouraged to express their thoughts, ask questions, and engage in dialogue with peers and educators. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia view of children as capable communicators, Mommy’s Kids supports literacy through emergent writing, shared reading, and documentation that honors each child’s voice. Language becomes a tool for connection, reflection, and meaning-making.
STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)
STEM learning at Mommy’s Kids Childcare Centre is rooted in curiosity and hands-on exploration. Children investigate scientific concepts by observing nature, experimenting with water and light, and asking big questions about how the world works. Technology is introduced through age-appropriate tools that support creativity and problem-solving, while engineering emerges through block play, construction challenges, and collaborative design. Mathematical thinking is woven into these experiences—measuring, sorting, predicting, and patterning—always guided by the children’s interests. Educators scaffold learning by listening closely, documenting discoveries, and offering provocations that deepen inquiry, making STEM a vibrant, child-led journey of wonder and discovery.
Outside Play
Outdoor play is a cornerstone of the curriculum, offering children daily opportunities to connect with nature, take risks, and explore their environment. Whether climbing, digging, observing insects, or building with sticks and stones, children engage in experiences that support physical development, environmental stewardship, and imaginative play. Educators follow the children’s lead, encouraging inquiry and wonder while fostering a sense of belonging and respect for the land.
